MOBILE HISTORY
MOTOROLA
On September 25, 1928, Paul V. Galvin and his brother, Joseph, founded the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in Chicago, USA. On October 2, 1946, Motorola’s communications equipment carried the first calls on the Illinois Bell Telephone Company’s new car radiotelephone service in Chicago. In 1947, the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation was renamed Motorola, Inc. On April 3, 1973, Motorola publicly unveiled the world’s first handheld mobile phone. The first public calls using Motorola’s DynaTAC (Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) technology took place in New York City. Motorola engineers had been experimenting with radio communications in the 800 and 900 MHz bands since the 1960s. The world’s first commercial portable mobile phone, the Motorola DynaTAC, received approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on September 21, 1983. The 794-gram phone became available to consumers in 1984. In 1989, the MicroTAC 9800X made its debut as the world’s smallest and lightest flip-style pocket phone.
