ROTARY DIAL TELEPHONES

PLASTIC ERA 1960-1975

In 1948, a new material appeared, ABS plastic. He got his initials from the initial letters of the chemical materials he uses. Acrylonitrile which makes the plastic rigid and gives it resistance over time, butadiene gives it resistance to heat, elasticity and impact resistance while styrene gives a wonderful gloss and helps to harden the material. In 1954, it was officially introduced to the commercial markets, when it began to be used for industrial construction.  In the late 1950s telephone companies began to incorporate it into their production. We are now moving into the era of plastic for telephony. In the first telephone devices there were problems with color fastness. After some period of use and exposed to sunlight, the colors lost their gloss and faded. Over time and after intensive research, it was improved by adding other chemical materials. But there were positives to the new hardware, the phones now didn’t break even if dropped on the floor they escaped with a few subtle scratches. Cheaper manufacturing cost and much higher production volume in less time.
