coin phones

The year 1970 marked a milestone in the modernization of public telephony in Greece, as older coinphones were replaced by new models designed to accept actual currency. It was no longer necessary to purchase special tokens to make a call. From that point on, until the mid-1990s, users had to insert standard drachma coins into the slot to operate these phones. Initially, they accepted one-drachma coins, followed later by two-, five-, and ten-drachma coins. This system remained in place until the mid-1990s, when these units began to be gradually replaced by cardphones.
