W48 phone restoration without severe damage to the Bakelite
First we disassemble the telephone device into the individual components, as shown in the photo.
On the Bakelite materials (shell, handle, covers and finger wheel), spread a little BRASSO with a cloth. Leave it for about a minute and rub with a cotton cloth. This way we will remove the difficult stains.
Then place the Bakelite parts in a bowl with dish detergent and lukewarm water and leave them for about half an hour. After half an hour, rub with a sponge that washes the dishes and rinses them. Finally we dry them.
Then we polish the bells of the ring mechanism with BRASSO to polish them. On our phone we gave them to a special shop and it nickel plated us because they had started to erode. Probably this phone worked for some time in an environment with enough humidity.
Screw on the base of the handset cable, the bells and the cable that will be connected to the socket.
We take the parts from Bakelite and smear them with Vaseline. Leave them for about ten minutes for the Vaseline to penetrate the Bakelite. Bakelite is a material that has pores, it is like a living organism. Vaseline is the best material for polishing. At the end of the ten minutes, rub the Bakelite with a cotton cloth for about two minutes. For those of you who have more technical knowledge and tools, scrub with a soft polishing brush at low speeds.
Then screw the base of the hook and place the hook. Inside the shell we screw the screw on the hook and place the safety at the bottom of the screw. We also place the piece of paper that indicates the number of the telephone connection at the bottom of the shell.
Place the braidcord on the handle and screw the plates to the earphone and microphone cases. Install the earphone and microphone capsules and screw on the handle caps.
Now place the finger wheel on the tray and then the number plate of the finger wheel. We put the plastic washer on the number plate one and we screw the screw that will keep the finger wheel fixed while we will carry out the process of selecting a telephone number.
On the inside of the shell, screw the selection tray and fasten the tray cable to the special position with the screw and the plastic washer, so as not to complicate the cable in the tray components.
Finally, screw the terminals of the selection disc into the sockets on the base of the phone and screw the shell on the base into the special sockets that exist. Our phone is ready and has nothing to envy from a new one. The time required for the process of reconstruction of the telephone device did not exceed five hours.
