Museo dei Mezzi di Comunicazione

In June 2023 we had a wonderful trip to Italy. We started from the northern part of the country, specifically from Bologna, and spent the last few days in wonderful Sicily. Traveling by car and enjoying the beauties of Central Italy, the special region of  Tuscany, we arrived on the 22nd of the month in the less touristic city of Arezzo. A city with excellent architecture, famous for its artistic heritage but with a relaxed pace of life. Arezzo is the capital of the province of the same name. One of the oldest Italian cities with finds from the Paleolithic era. Wonderful Gothic style church in the central square, nice palaces but we visited it with the purpose of seeing up close the communication museum (MUMEC-Museo dei Mezzi di Comunicazione) that you keep in the city. Housed in a medieval palace with a unique architecture, it encloses in its interior, apart from its special history, the past of telecommunications. With collections of telephony, television, typewriters, radio, (all the exhibits are from the personal collection of Mr. Fausto Casi who is also the scientific Director of the museum). The part of this particular museum that piqued our interest, (that was the reason we visited it after all) were the showcases with reference to the history of telephony with old devices but also newer ones, wireless communication with a dominant position held by the father, Guglielmo Marconi and some of his achievements as well as references to the achievements of the inventor Antonio Meucci. The entrance to the museum is very cheap, only 2€. The employees of the museum are particularly helpful and friendly to the visitor. At the end of our tour we also bought a book of three hundred pages that refers to the exhibits of the museum, their history with plans and many photos. The only negative of the book is that it is published only in Italian, without this of course reducing its value. Leaving after a two-hour stay inside the museum, we were informed that on the first weekend of every month, one of the largest open-air markets of old objects is hosted in the central square. We were not lucky as we visited this wonderful city on a Thursday. We hope in the near future to schedule a visit again and manage to wander around the flea market, which by the way is considered one of the largest in Italy.
